Last month we took a much needed weekend trip to Big Bear Lake in Southern California. Big Bear is a small town located in the San Bernardino National Forest, about a 2 hour drive from Los Angeles. It is a popular destination for skiing during the winter and horseback riding, fishing and kayaking during the warmer seasons. The long winding road through the mountains offer spectacular scenery. It is beautiful.
We were able to rent a house for $150/night through airbnb. It was a two-story home with 4 bedrooms, two bathrooms, two living rooms and a kitchen. One of the living rooms had a sofa bed, another room had a bunk bed and a sofa bed and the three other rooms had a queen sized bed. It fit 12 people comfortably, yes 12!
We have visited Big Bear Lake before but this was the first time we actually stayed a weekend. This trip was great bonding time with my husbands side of the family. It was loud and crazy at times but it turned out great. I must admit though, it was a bit scary staying in the middle of a forest where it is pitch black at night.
Since the home had a full sized kitchen we bought groceries and cooked. We did not eat out once during the entire trip. Everybody lent a hand in some way in the kitchen. We watched movies, played games and went out for walks through the heavily forested roads. My husband and I even came across a coyote during one of our morning walks. We took the kids to a place called Alpine Slide at Magic Mountain where you can find fun outside activities. (Pictured below) We also visited The Village which is a bunch of cute little shops and restaurants.
It snows in Big Bear around the end of November. Snow is rare in Southern California except in certain mountains. We went Mid-November and didn’t get any snow but that was OK because the road to get there is dangerous enough without snow. Also, the rates for rental homes go up significantly during the snowy weather.
I really wish I could’ve taken more pictures but I was busy enjoying some down time. Most of these pictures were taken by my 9 year-old.
